A former Royal Marine has been awarded over £545,000 in compensation from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in relation to military hearing loss claim as a result of exposure to excessive noise.
The Marine had originally been claiming over £1.25 million, in what was seen by many as a landmark case.
The former Marine claimed that his military hearing loss had been caused by his prolonged exposure to noise from thousands of rounds of ammunition, helicopters and aircraft and a range of weapons during his 14 years of service. He claimed that he was not given the correct hearing protection during his service and is now required to wear hearing aids for the rest of his life. He also intended to work his entire career within the military, however, he was medically discharged and his time in the military was cut short due to his damaged hearing.
Latest Government figures show that military related claims for hearing loss are now the most common type of claim against the MoD for financial compensation.
